I've had that problem also, that was an adjustment of the upper back panel limit switch. What I did before I adjusted it was, when the upper back panel retracted I tried it up to hold it in place. Then when I opened the lid to put the top down, once the lid opened I would stop, untie it and continue. Here is a link to how to adjust the limit switch. http://www.certifiedrebuilders.com/id30.htm
Certified Rebuilders does a great job if you need the limit switch rebuilt or repaired. The owner, Barry is great and always helpful.

Save the headaches.....Not matter if you succeed in your rebuild, there are parts in this switch that are going to fail because of inherent non-robust design. I tried the rebuild many years ago and never got it going. Luckily I sent it to these guys and they upgrade the weak links in the switch and it has works flawlessly for 15 years.

Re: Conv. top not retracking

My experience has been that it's usually the tray erect limit switch that causes this specific problem, so start by checking its condition and operation. This switch stops the movement of the tray in the tray erect cycle, but it also starts the movement of the top in the top retract cycle which is germane to your problem. First check to make sure the switch isn't broken, cracked etc. The construction of these switches isn't very robust to put it mildly, but they can be rebuilt to better-than-new by Barry Tatelbaum at: www.certifiedrebuilders.com

Barry, I can't thank you enough for your fast service. I got the switch a few days ago and finally got a chance to install it today. Your instructions were spot on! We followed them to the letter. When the moment of truth came, I hit the top down switch and everything worked as designed! I hadn't seen the top down on that car in over 2 years! Thank you so much! WM

The switch arrived yesterday.. it looks wonderful. I hooked it up last night and it went through all the stages of closing with the top down with no problems. Thanks again for your prompt service and great price, John O'Keefe
Just wanted to let you know the top is once again working and seems to be going through all its cycles properly now. Thanks for the good job rebuilding the switch. Rich Rambo
Kudos to Barry Tatelbaum and Certified Rebuilders for exceeding expectations. In only eight days (instead of the fourteen promised) I received back a much better than new upper back panel limit switch for my 1966 Lincoln convertible. I have owned this car since 1967, and for the first time the top works flawlessly.
The upper panel switch has always been the weak link in the top's operation. That link is now strong. Thanks for a job well done! David Deming, Stamford CT
